Do you see the birds? This is a series I have been working on. It is acrylic on canvas. I had fun with pattern and color. Aspen Transcendent is part of a series that I have been working on. Aspen have been painted so many times and it is fascinating to try to capture the spirit using so much color. This one is a watercolor and it is my favorite so far. I am happy with the color and hard and soft edges. It has a happy feeling about it that I like. Maybe I should title it Aspen Party!
Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-57673669884736827262017-07-10T08:12:00.001-07:002017-07-10T08:12:24.436-07:00

My Koi painting, In Golden Pond, sold a couple weeks ago and I miss it already. I really like this one and am happy that it is going to a good home. I taught a watercolor class last week and these paintings were done by my students. They did great and several had not painted with watercolor before. So Many Dreams is my new abstract floral. I love the way dark surrenders to light in these new pieces. I am also excited about the soft edges that have so much variety. They remind me of the way wildflowers burst upon us after the rains of spring. They are such a happy surprise after a long brown winter.
Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-45017523325044159242017-04-10T13:08:00.001-07:002017-04-10T13:08:49.259-07:00

I had painted this figure using blacks, olives, golds and oranges, and while I liked the abstract quality of these hues, I thought it was harsh. These cool colors are better for the mood of the painting and I am happier with the result. The painting has a lot of palette knife paint application, so it is thick and heavily textured. It is 24" x 20" on gallery wrapped canvas. It is titled Quick Pose.Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-17546404112340847102017-04-10T13:00:00.002-07:002017-04-10T13:00:50.250-07:00

Determined to create a nonobjective painting, I began to layer colors. Working from transparent darks to opaque mid tones and then lights, I concentrated on my edges, trying to have hard, soft and lost and found edges. I thought about warms and cools and the sizes of my shapes. After all these considerations, I realized that this piece wasn't as abstract as I originally intended. It is another floral painting. I love the surprise of the wildflowers along the highways in Texas. This painting is My Surprise, and it is 20" x 20'" on gallery wrapped canvas.
Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-83476173917672191612017-04-10T12:47:00.000-07:002017-04-10T12:47:02.898-07:00

Don't you love spring time? This has been a beautiful season with lots of wind, rain and cool mornings and evenings. The flowers are beautiful and little visitors are abundant too. This is the inspiration for this acrylic. It is Blue, and it is on a 20" x 20" gallery wrapped canvas.
Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-27404253668421133732017-01-24T09:53:00.000-08:002017-01-24T09:53:29.726-08:00

Variety in edges and luscious colors. Those are my intentions in this new piece that is a 36" square, acrylic on canvas. I am working with acrylic inks and acrylics to achieve luminosity and a loose technique that combines my love of watercolor and the forgiveness of acrylics. Pink Peonies has a nice feel for Valentine's Day, which is right around the corner. This January, 2017 has been warm, and rainy so far. Warm for winter that is. We have had many foggy days here in central Texas, and though I love the wonderful neutral colors of winter, I have to express myself with bright, happy colors. I hope you enjoy my winter flowers, as they are out of my head and heart. Today seems like a good one to show some of my many watercolors. I love the medium, but find that I am super picky about the look I want to present. These have a softness that I am always trying to achieve. There is also a variety of edges, though I admit that I will keep working to achieve even softer edges in places. Thanks for taking a look!
Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-51850337377704504092016-09-29T10:57:00.000-07:002016-09-29T10:57:04.611-07:00

White Poppies is 24" x 30" in acrylic. I am having so much fun working this way. My goal is to stay loose and create a great composition with value and then use color as jewels. I have been working in acrylics for awhile and just thought I would work on a really loose watercolor with a definite focal point. This one is 11" x 15" and it is called Memories of the Southwest.
Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-61220169991999544312016-08-08T09:29:00.002-07:002016-08-08T09:29:51.659-07:00

This painting is a nice big square, 36" x 36". It is acrylic on canvas and I am calling it Urban Winter. I am so enjoying working in this way. It is like searching for a buried treasure every time I paint.
Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-67453102631655916962016-08-08T09:25:00.001-07:002016-08-08T09:25:16.385-07:00

Sometimes They Become Something Else. This painting went through several transformations and now I think it is happy with it's identity. I think people can be that way too. The core is always there and life shapes us. Deep thoughts for a Monday morning.
I am so happy to be posting again. I have been so busy remodeling a home that we moved into last year that I just decided not to post for awhile. I have been painting though and working on finding my voice. I am happy with both difficult endeavors. The house is feeling more like a home and the paintings feel more like what I am supposed to be painting. I guess they feel more like home too. Sometimes growth comes from upheaval, but I have been working with a coach who is a wonderful artist. Her name is Gwen Fox. I can't say enough about her great critiques and individual support. I plan to blog more often now and show off my new works. This one is called Her Morning Meditation and it acrylic on canvas, 20" x 24".
Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-11476633549271114412016-07-21T12:00:00.000-07:002016-07-21T12:00:11.239-07:00

Open Windows is one of my newest paintings in acrylic. I was feeling the pull towards lots of texture and pattern to achieve balance and movement. It is 20" x 16".

I have been away for awhile. It has been a busy year, but I have continued to paint and now I will start posting again on a regular basis.
Just Chillin' is my latest figure piece in acrylic on paper. I am really having fun with acrylics, playing with color and patterns in my compositions. I worked from a sketch that I did a few years ago. I think she is at a park listening to a band and enjoying a soft breeze on her neck. I hope so anyway.

Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099272146555423458.post-64061600884635231832015-05-05T07:19:00.000-07:002015-05-05T07:19:10.486-07:00

Sometimes it just feels like time is passing by so quickly. It has really sped up since the grand children arrived, but life is fun and rewarding. As I work on this series of figures I want to include symbols that have meaning for me at this stage in my life and so a clock can show up with a dragonfly and it makes perfect sense to me. This painting is titled Passing Time and it is opaque watercolor on hot press watercolor paper, (30" x 22").

Nancy Brandt Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00534852450117183624noreply@blogger.com0
